About Felixstowe
Felixstowe is a port town and civil parish in the East Suffolk district of England, situated at the tip of the Colneis peninsula between the rivers Orwell and Deben. With a population of approximately 24,500, Felixstowe is best known as the home of the UK's largest container port, which handles nearly half of all UK containerised trade.
Beyond its industrial significance, Felixstowe is a beloved seaside resort with a rich Edwardian heritage. The town is widely recognised as the birthplace of the British beach hut — photographic records of beach huts at the Spa area date back to 1895.
Felixstowe is approximately 72 miles northeast of London and is easily accessible by train from Ipswich. The town's postcode district is IP11, and it falls within the Suffolk Coastal parliamentary constituency.
The town's history stretches back to before the Norman Conquest. Landguard Fort, at the mouth of the River Orwell, is the site of the last opposed invasion of England in 1667, when Dutch forces attempted to capture the strategically vital fortification.
Felixstowe played a significant role in both World Wars — as a Royal Naval Air Service seaplane base in the First World War, and as a Coastal Forces base in the Second.
Today, Felixstowe hosts the annual Book Festival, the Carnival, and numerous community events. The town is served by Felixstowe Town railway station with regular services to Ipswich.
